Barbara from Tigers & Strawberries is quite busy with her daughter Kate, so it's Danielle's turn to chose The Spice is Right themes for the next months. Foodbloggers should describe one of their commonly used family or household spice mixes and give a recipe which uses it.

I have to admit, that we don't have a family or household spice mix. In my family we just used single spices, not a mixture. For a long time the only spice mix I knew was Lebkuchen-spice, a mixture of cinnamon, cloves, all-spice, coriander seed, ginger, cardamom and nutmeg. Sometimes mace is used instead of nutmeg. Until I went to university I hadn't a clue what mace is.

Last year I baked a Make-ahead mulled wine cake which required mixed spice. At that time I replaced it with Lebkuchen-spice, but my fellow blogger Petra found a recipe for me.


This is a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, mace and ground cloves.

I used the mixed spice for

1. Mini carrot muffins
2. Brighton Gingerbread

And I found some more interesting recipes with Mixed Spice. So this will be a common spice mix in our household.

1 tablesp. Cinnamon
1 tablesp. Nutmeg
1 tablesp. Allspice
2 teasp. Mace
1 teasp. Ground cloves

1. Mix all ingredients together.

2. Store in airtight glass jar.
